      Magic Estimations 2.0 — Runs on Atlassian

      The new Magic Estimations, rebuilt natively on Atlassian Forge and carrying the Runs on Atlassian designation: the app runs entirely inside Atlassian's infrastructure, app data stays in Atlassian-hosted storage, and no data leaves Atlassian — the only external service is error monitoring, declared as an egress permission visible to admins.

      Your data is already in place when the update arrives — it has been kept in sync since the transition release. Sessions in progress are paused briefly during the switch and resume afterwards.

      A complete rebuild means a few features of the current app are not carried over — see the migration guide for what changes and the alternatives.

      Forge bridge — transition release

      Same app, same interface, now delivered on the Atlassian Forge platform. The update rolls out on Atlassian's schedule and requires no action from admins. In the background, app data is copied to Atlassian-hosted storage and kept in sync — the first step of the migration to Forge.

      Managing your estimation sessions just got a whole lot easier! With the new bulk actions feature, you can now select multiple sessions at once and perform actions in one go. Whether you want to clean up old sessions by deleting them or transfer ownership to another team member, it's all just a few clicks away. No more tedious one-by-one edits — keep your home screen organized effortlessly.

      Card layout customization​

      The new Card layout customization feature allows you to add more context by configuring up to 3 custom fields to the issue layout, plus an Auxiliary field displayed next to the Estimation field for easy reference or comparison. Currently, only fields supported by the app can be rendered.

      You can reach the feature from Game Settings or Game Creation views by clicking the button next to the estimation field selector.

      September 2024 release

      New features:

      • Move to top/bottom options is available from the context menu on the estimation board;

      • Customization of the game list layout has been added; new supported columns and sorting include Created, Updated, Saved, and Owner;

      • Custom field IDs are shown when selecting an Estimation Field to distinguish fields with similar names;

      • Control whether you want to clone games with or without issues and their board positions using the Include session issues feature;

      • Jira admins can re-assign game owners from the game list menu.

      We are introducing multiple improvements to the app.

      • Bulk edit: “Select” an issue from the context menu, select more issues from the board, and move or delete the issues from the context menu.

      Introducing a time-saving update: our built-in queries history now stores your last 10 JQL presets, eliminating the need for note-taking and copy-pasting. Plus, the JQL input field is now multiline, allowing effortless creation of more complex queries. We've also made it simpler to revert changes when selecting your backlog scope.

      Quick add issues to game (remastered)

      Not only have we allowed game moderators to add issues to all stages of Async game, but we also enabled all participants to suggest adding new issues to the game backlog.

      From now on, the moderator role can be automatically assigned to an online participant in case session moderator is offline. Session owner can revoke the moderator's role upon reconnection. All existing sessions will get the Auto-assign moderators setting enabled by default.

      Issue context menu & board navigation

      Issue context menu provides a convenient way of issue navigation for moderators and players: move to lane, start voting, remove from the board, and copy issue (link, summary, key) actions are available.
      New Board navigation controls help with the horizontal scrolling of the estimation boards.

      Async Poker game mode

      In this version, we introduce Planning Poker mode for remote teams - Async Poker, that consists of 3 main steps:

      1. A moderator creates a game, selects issues and prepares the estimation board (pins reference issues, distributes already estimated ones).

      2. The game moderator starts the asynchronous estimation, where every participant estimates issues separately on their own Magic Estimations boards.

      3. A Planning Poker game with pre-populated votes from the participants' async estimates. The game moderator can finalize estimates based on async results or interactively re-estimate some issues.

      We also introduce the Chat tab for in-game communication, especially for Async Poker.

      September 2022 release

      Delete drop area is back, this time in a convenient place at the bottom of the backlog.

      Pinned reference issues can now be avoided while saving estimates by using an appropriate feature from the saving dialog.

      Board panel

      Board panel has been added to all game types with session estimation progress, total estimates (sum of all estimates), and the average estimate for Poker voting. Board controls have been moved to the new panel. And from now on, Board and Participants panels can be locked to be displayed all the time.

      Additionally, in this version we improved players' layout to maximize the number of displayed avatars, added persisting game settings for Epic labels, locked/unlock panel state, and sound switcher.

      Estimation value presets

      The new feature allows editing the list of Estimation value presets and defining the default one. Presets might be edited by Jira admins, they are saved globally, but separately for each custom field type: numeric, time, or text fields.

      Voting timeout (timer)

      Voting timeout (timer) feature is now available for Poker sessions. Activate it in session settings in order to timebox voting process. When the countdown stops, voting results are revealed automatically.

      1. Global permissions have been added to define user groups that can use the app.

      Support of Priority field, Clone session feature

      • Starting from this version you and your team can use Priority as the “estimation field” on the Magic Estimations board to align your priorities. Select the field in session configuration and the app will suggest available priority values.

      • With the help of the Clone session feature, you can reuse the current session’s settings, backlog, and board state to create a new one. The person cloning the session will be assigned as a moderator of the new session.

      Quick add issue

      From now on, there is a possibility to quickly add issues to the backlog by searching through issues by key, summary, or description. You can also create a brand new issue and add it to the backlog automatically.

      New estimation board UI provides numerous improvements to user management, game controls, personal settings, and board navigation. For example, sound and participant role controls are moved to the right panel, participants can see who has already voted during Poker game, moderators can change participants order during Classic Magic Estimation game.

      JQL autocomplete

      JQL autocomplete assists game moderators with filtering issues that are added to the game. The feature suggests available operators and expressions, checks JQL's correctness, and automatically applies correct queries.

      Planning Poker-style estimation has been added to the app. Select Poker mode while creating a game, choose an issue for voting, and together with your team provide personal votes for lanes (estimation values) for engaging non-biased estimation. More details

      Additional highlight options

      Issue cards on Magic Estimations board received several new highlight options:

      • Manual highlights. Any participant can highlight any card on the board to bring attention of the others. For the session moderator, the highlight option replaces Pin issue one when Option/Alt is pressed

      • Lane change marker. Participants can see how many times an issue has changed its position on the board. Issues moved more times are highlighted more intensively, consider discussing their positions.

      • “Moved by” marker. Participants can see who placed an issue to the current position by hovering over the Lane change marker. If it’s missing, the issue has been moved by the session moderator during the game pause.

      Estimation values presets

      Select one of the presets of estimation values: Classic Fibonacci, Agile Fibonacci, T-Shirt sizes or Small/Medium/Large. Easily modify the preset values to fit your team’s needs.

      The latest feature allows displaying custom labels instead of estimation values in Fixed Lanes headers. In session settings, use “LABEL=VALUE” format, for example, “XXL=13” to show the label on the board, but to save the value in a proper numeric custom field.

      The feature unlocks using T-Shirt sizes estimates in Magic Estimations.

      Pinned reference issues

      From now on, session moderators can pin one issue in each lane to serve as a reference. To do so, point the cursor on a card from the board and click on the pin icon.

      Improved Distribute issues feature

      The pin option has also been added to the Distribute issues feature, which distributes already estimated issues from backlog to the appropriate lanes. Click on the Distribute option from board actions and activate the "Automatically pin issues to the top of the lanes" option.

      The Distribute button has been added as a primary action for a moderator when he/she joins a fresh session.

      "No limits" game settings

      Magic Estimation game might have no time and number of moves per turn limits.

      Advanced user management

      Moderators can pass turns and switch participants between Players and Spectators groups through a new Manage participants tab. Click on the Participants icon next to the avatars group to get to the User management.

      While saving estimates activate the "Add a comment" option from Advances section to populate estimation details to issues' comments

      Increased issues-per-board limit

      Now you can estimate up to 300 issues in one session. Backlog management has been refined, the pagination has been added.
